Winter Cold Storage Tips for Power Mobility

Do you know the best way to store your power wheelchair or scooter?

The BEST place to store your power mobility equipment is in a dry, warm, room temperature space

  • If it's not possible to store your equipment inside, make sure your outside storage area is dry, and use a cover to protect your scooter or wheelchair from moisture & dust. A garage or shed would be an example of a suitable outdoor area.
  • Remove the batteries & store them separately.
  • Make sure to fully charge the batteries before removal, and charge them fully once a month during the time they're not being used.
  • Storage in a damp area is not recommended and may permanently damage your equipment or electronics.
  • Block the tires if possible to prevent them from having contact with the cold ground.
  • If you've stored your equipment over the winter, give it some time to come to room temperature before you turn it on.

It's a good idea to bring your scooter or power chair in for a spring tuneup once you're ready to use it again. In fact, our technicians suggest bringing your power mobility equipment in for a tuneup once a season, or about every 3-4 months. This is the approximate amount of time that your caster bearings will last if you have a power wheelchair and are using it regularly.
